Chennai: TVS Motor Company has launched the first super premium motorcycle made in partnership with BMW Motoradd. Priced at an aggressive Rs 2.05 lakh ex-showroom (the tag will vary from state to state), the Apache RR310 marks the entry of the company in the super premium segment. Positioned as a street bike with solid racing DNA, the company is expecting around 10,000 units in combined domestic and global sales from the Apache RR 310. The bookings will begin shortly and the bike will be available to customers from the month-end, said top company officials.
Sudarshan Venu, joint MD, TVS Motor Company said, “We will launch this product phase wise but reasonably quickly in our global markets as well. Right now we have enough capacity at our Hosur plant so it will be make in India for the world. We will also launch our (new version of the) 160cc Apache soon. The Apache RR310 is our first foray into the super premium segment,” he said.
The company, he said, is “committed to the premium and super premium segments” and will launch further products. “We have the current Apache range – 160cc, 180cc and 200cc motorcycles – and in the upto-200 cc naked bikes segment we are growing at around 28% while the market is growing 10-12%. This growth has come out of our racing heritage and we will focus on that,” he added.
The premium bikes market – which comprises just 15% of the overall motorcycle market in India – is witnessesing string growth. It is divided into three segments – sports, tourer and heritage. TVS is zooming in on the fast-growing sports segment where competition like KTM and Yamaha are also focusing attention. “This segment is growing faster as the highways get better, weekend travel takes off and riding clubs get more popular,” said Venu. “With youngsters enjoying greater affluence, this segment will grow.”
The Apache brand has already clocked 2.5 million units in cumulative global sales so far and should hit 3 million by this year end. “In…
