President Trump reignited his feud with Colin Kaepernick on Monday night — bragging about a recent report that said NFL owners weren’t picking up the quarterback this offseason because they’re afraid of sparking a Twitter war with the commander-in-chief.
The article that the president seemed to be referring to, when he made the statement during a rally in Kentucky, is a Bleacher Report piece featuring quotes from an AFC general manager who claimed that teams weren’t signing the former 49er due to the possible backlash from fans.
Kaepernick sparked outrage last season when he chose to take a knee during the national anthems of each game, as a form of protest against police brutality and racial injustice.
While the one-source Bleacher Report story only referenced 10 percent of NFL owners, it was apparently enough to make Trump take credit for Kaepernick still being a free agent.
“There was an article today…that NFL owners don’t want to pick him up because they don’t want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump,” the president told the crowd in Louisville.
The seemingly random jab wound up sparking a large roar from those in attendance — and a slew of posts from social media users.”You believe that? I just saw that,” Trump added. “I said, ‘If I remember that one, I’m gonna report it to the people of Kentucky because they like it when people actually stand for the American flag.’”
“Pathetic jackass takes credit for @Kaepernick7 being blackballed,” tweeted Dave Zirin, host of Edge of Sports Podcast. “It’s funny because Kap stands against racism!”
“At least [Kaepernick] is standing up for America! And NOT ALL the Russsian ties this pseudo fake president has in his businesses!” wrote another Twitter user.
Marco Buscaglia added, “Trump skipped over the Russians, wiretapping & ACA and instead took on the No. 1 issue of the day: Colin Kaepernick.”
