Reign’s Megan Rapinoe, Hope Solo named to U.S. women’s national team roster for Rio Olympics

Rapinoe and Seattle teammate Hope Solo both made the cut for a team that will shoot for a fourth-straight women’s soccer gold medal next month in Rio de Janeiro.

Seattle Reign midfielder Megan Rapinoe was named Tuesday to the final, 18-player U.S. women’s national team roster for the upcoming Olympic games eight months after tearing her ACL in a training session.

Rapinoe has yet to play a minute for either the Reign or USWNT this year, and she returned to full training just last week.

“Even when Megan go hurt, in my mind, did I do the math in terms of the run up and was it possible?” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said in the release. “I knew she would be in with a shot in terms of the timing of it. I know she had excellent care in Seattle and we kept very close tabs on where she was and where she was progressing.

“Is Megan going to be able to come in and play 90 minutes every game? No. She is going to bring experience and able to help us in certain moments, whether it’s starting or finishing, and her experience in the locker room … she’s a massive bonus for us going into Brazil.”

Reign teammate, Richland native and former Washington standout Hope Solo was also named to the team, as expected. Last weekend in Chicago, Solo became the first goalkeeper to ever reach the 100-shutout milestone in international play with the USWNT’s 1-0 win over South Africa.

The U.S., which will take aim at its fourth straight Olympic gold, opens group-stage play on Aug. 3 against New Zealand.

The Reign will host a pre-match ceremony to send off both Solo and Rapinoe prior to Saturday night’s home match against the Western New York Flash. Per the club release, Rapinoe is expected to be on the Seattle roster and “available for selection in the match.”
