To the Editor:
Homeschooling? I have to politely decline. Public school suits my children just fine.
I advocate for public schooling. Why? There are so many benefits to it. My children learn about and live alongside those of varied, diverse backgrounds. They see that America is made up of a beautiful array of cultures, religions, and races. In public schools they become part of a larger community — an extended family that nurtures and supports their dreams. They learn to cooperate and work as a team.
Public school teachers bring their expertise and love for various subjects. Children learn that other adults can be relied upon to help them grow. They learn to trust and respects other adults besides their parents.
The school schedule is predictable and organized. Time is balanced so that equal attention can be given to all subjects. Public schools offer wonderful opportunities to join clubs, band, and sports teams. This opens up another avenue for children to grow and expand their circle of friends.
Each week, your paper has proof of the success of public schools and their students. We see honor roll lists, school-run fundraisers for charities, scholarship winners, and more. I am proud of these students and of the great teachers that serve.
