Lafayette Parish School Board members will hear new reports Tuesday about two of the district’s specialized programs.

At an executive committee workshop, district officials will review the offerings at the W.D. and Mary Baker Smith Career Center “in regards to current enrollment numbers, capacity of the facility and future plans to meet the impending needs of Jump Start,” according to board documents.

Jump Start is the state’s career and technical education program. State officials are in the process of expanding it to more students in an effort to give stronger options to students who do not plan on attending a four-year university.

The Career Center is the home of Lafayette Parish’s career and technical education classes and programs.

Also up for discussion is N.P. Moss Preparatory School “in regards to current programs, current enrollment numbers, capacity of the facility and potential future plans to meet the needs of students in the parish.”

The school opened in August 2012 under then-Superintendent Pat Cooper. It was designed to provide additional support for students who struggle with academic and/or behavior problems at their home school. Last year, the school received an “F” grade from the Louisiana Department of Education, with an overall score of 17.5.

Joe Craig, the district’s chief administrative officer, said both discussions will be “open-ended” and there are no specific plans for either site at this time.

“Some board members would just like to know what programs are offered, the enrollment and what the vision and goals are for the future,” Craig said. “There are no plans for any changes at this time. Now that the tax propositions have been rescinded, the board and staff are looking at what programs are available at the different facilities, and what options we might have for them going forward. But for now, it’s information only.”

The executive committee meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the school board central office, 113 Chaplin Drive.
