The Golden Knights of Lockport finished 2017 as chess royalty.
The Knights were named K-8 Team Chess Champions during the 2017 Western New York Pioneer Fall Scholastic Championship, which was held Dec. 2 at the Pioneer High School in Yorkshire, N.Y.
The team, which was K–4 Team Chess Champions in 2016, moved up to a higher competitive level and continued their winning ways. Led by outstanding individual performances and trophy winners Tristan Perkins – representing Emmet Belknap Intermediate School – and second-place winner Jonathan Carmina – representing North Park Junior High School, and team members JonLuke Pencille and Ryan Carmina, the Knights topped Bradford, Pa., by one half-point during the one-day, five-game USCF-sanctioned championship.
Also in 2017:
– the Golden Knights’ Carson Feero finished third and Shaan Cheruvu finished fourth, earning individual trophies at the New York State 50th annual Scholastic Chess Championships held in Saratoga Springs.
– Jonathan Carmina, Ryan Carmina and Tristan Perkins competed with 5,600 players at the 2017 SuperNationals Elementary Scholastic (K-6) Chess Championships held in Nashville, Tenn. Perkins had a personal best and missed earning a national individual trophy by one half-point.
– Ryan Carmina and William Oh were the undefeated champions at the 10th annual 2017 Mayor’s Cup Chess Championships held in November. In December, Jonathan and Ryan Carmina earned a trophy at the 2017 USS Little Rock Scholastic Tournament at the Audubon Branch Library. Jonathan Carmina finished the month by winning 11 of his last 12 chess games.
– At the 2017 USS Little Rock Open Chess Tournament, held at the Main Place Mall in Buffalo, Danielle Spencer was the Under 15 section co-champion with Glenn Conlin. In June, Danielle Spencer (Lockport High) was selected to the United States…
