Leading the way for other radio broadcasters, Bell Media has partnered with trade organization Music Canada and music licensing company Re:Sound on an unprecedented new data project to improve efficiencies in royalty collection for Canadian rights holders.
By automating the industry’s content distribution, the organizations are hoping to streamline sound recording data within the Canadian music ecosystem, in effect improving the accuracy and speed of collection and distribution.
It is part of an ongoing initiative by Music Canada and Re:Sound to develop administrative efficiencies within the Canadian music industry. Last year, $2 million (CAD) in additional monies were collected as a result of the information clean up and new single database by Connect Music Licensing and Re:Sound Music Licensing.
By consolidating data and maximizing the use of International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs), among other improvements, payouts to rights holders — including songwriters, artists, background musicians, music publishers and record labels — through such organizations as SOCAN, SODRAC and CMRRA, are faster and there is 28 percent more revenue for major labels and members of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA).
“As someone with love for Canada’s music industry, I am thrilled by the results of this project,” Bell Media president Randy Lennox, who formerly ran Universal Music Canada, said in a statement. “When Music Canada’s Graham Henderson approached us to help resolve what has been a longstanding issue within Canada’s music industry, it was an easy decision to lend Bell Media’s resources and expertise. The automation of the tracking process establishes international best practices that benefit creators while making the entire system considerably more efficient.”
